"This will go down as the most difficult holiday season to prepare for, whether you're a retailer, a vendor, or anything in between," says Joel Bines, co-head of retail consulting at AlixPartners LLP. The smaller crowds were planned, said Jill Renslow, Mall of America's senior vice president of business development. By 2017, Americans were spending $6.6 billion online during Cyber Monday sales events, just shy of the $7.9 billion spent on Black Friday itself, both online and in stores. Many stores that have reopened still have limited capacity because of social distancing restrictions and are likely to bring in only a fraction of their typical holiday season haul. The company will continue following the guidelines it created when it reopened its famous Herald Square outpost in June.

Like many other retailers on this Black Friday, Best Buy said it was offering curbside pickup as it limited the number of shoppers inside stores to reduce the risk of spreading the coronavirus. Only 23 states adopted the change, creating a de facto double holiday that was finally rectified in 1941, when Congress officially proclaimed Thanksgiving to be the fourth Thursday in November. In fact, Black Friday didn't take on its current more positive significance as America's most popular holiday shopping day until the 1980s.
